Devon Achane Signs $64 Million Extension With Dolphins, and the Running Back Market Keeps Rising

The Miami Dolphins made it official on May 13: Devon Achane is staying in South Florida for the next four years on a deal worth $64 million, with bonuses that could push the total to $68 million.

That $16 million average annual value makes Achane the third-highest-paid running back in the NFL. And based on what he’s shown in his first two seasons, the Dolphins earned that number more than the other way around.

Achane is one of the most explosive players in football. His speed and acceleration in the open field are legitimate top-end in the league, and his ability to turn short passes and screens into big gains gives Miami’s offense a dimension that most teams can’t replicate. He’s not just a between-the-tackles grinder. He’s a playmaker who forces defenses to account for him at all times.

The $32 million in guaranteed money is the number that actually matters here. That’s real commitment from Miami’s front office, and it signals that the Dolphins view Achane as a cornerstone of their offense for the foreseeable future.

Running back contracts have been contentious in the NFL for years. The position has been chronically underpaid relative to other skill positions, and players and agents have pushed back hard on that reality over the past two seasons. Achane getting $16 million per year is part of a broader shift where explosive, versatile backs are finally getting market-rate deals.

The Dolphins have made their offensive identity clear. They want to run the ball with a dynamic threat who can take it the distance on any touch. Achane is that player. Pairing him with a healthy quarterback situation gives Miami an offense that can compete with anyone in the AFC.

The deal keeps Achane in Miami through 2030. He’ll be 27 when this contract ends, right in his prime, and there’s every reason to believe he’ll perform well enough to earn another big deal when this one expires.

For Miami, this is good roster management. You don’t let a player like Achane get to free agency. You lock him up before another team can come in and overpay, which is exactly what happened here.

The running back market isn’t slowing down. Achane just moved the floor for the next wave of extensions at the position.
