Shedeur Sanders vs. Deshaun Watson: Who Wins the Browns QB1 Job in 2026?

The Cleveland Browns have a quarterback competition brewing, and it might be the most fascinating one in the league. Rookie Shedeur Sanders and veteran Deshaun Watson are battling for the starting job, and the answer will tell us a lot about where this franchise is headed.

On one side you have Watson, the enormous contract Cleveland has been trying to justify for years. The deal has been an anchor on the franchise, and the on-field return has been nowhere near the investment. The Browns would love nothing more than to see him reclaim some form and validate the money.

On the other side is Sanders, the rookie with the famous last name and the chip on his shoulder from a draft slide that became one of the biggest stories of the spring. He arrived in Cleveland with something to prove and a fan base ready to embrace anyone not named Watson.

The Case for Sanders

Cleveland’s fans have already made up their minds, and you can hardly blame them. Sanders represents a fresh start and a cost-controlled future. If he shows enough in camp, the pressure to hand him the keys will be enormous, because the alternative is more of a Watson era that has brought mostly frustration.

Sanders is accurate, poised, and was a far better prospect than his draft position suggested. A rookie who can move the offense and avoid disasters would give the Browns a reason to finally turn the page.

The Case for Watson

The cold business reality is that Cleveland is paying Watson a fortune, and teams do not bench that kind of money easily. If Watson looks anything like the player the Browns thought they were trading for, the franchise will be tempted to ride him and try to recoup value.

There is also the development angle. Throwing a rookie into a tough situation before he is ready can stunt his growth. A patient organization might want Sanders to sit and learn while Watson absorbs the early hits.

My take: the fans want Sanders, the future is Sanders, and the Browns should lean into it sooner rather than later. Riding the sunk cost of the Watson contract has burned this team enough already. Give the rookie a real shot and find out what you have. The competition is must-watch theater, and Cleveland desperately needs it to break in the kid’s favor. Whatever Cleveland decides, the entire NFL will be watching to see if the kid is ready to carry a franchise that badly needs hope.
