AJ Brown Traded to Patriots: Eagles Move Star WR for 2028 First-Round Pick

The New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles agreed to one of the biggest receiver trades the NFL has seen in years. AJ Brown is heading to New England, and the Eagles are getting a 2028 first-round pick plus a 2027 fifth-rounder in return.

This was supposed to come together earlier in the offseason. Brown’s social media activity, including deactivating his account at one point, made it pretty clear his time in Philadelphia was running out. The June 1 trade window was the obvious target, and the two sides made it official the moment the salary cap calendar opened.

This is a massive get for Drake Maye and the Patriots. It is also a stunning admission from the Eagles that they were ready to move on from one of the best receivers in football.

Drake Maye Just Got the Weapon He Needed

Maye is heading into Year 3 with a Super Bowl runner-up finish on his resume and now a true No. 1 receiver in the building. AJ Brown is a top-five receiver in football when he is healthy and motivated. He demands double teams. He wins contested catches. He stretches the field and runs after the catch better than almost anyone at his size.

For a young quarterback who has already proven he can win games, adding Brown is the kind of move that turns the Patriots from a good team into a real contender. Maye finally has a true alpha at the receiver position.

New England’s offense was already heading in the right direction. With Brown opposite their existing pieces and Stevenson and Henderson in the backfield, the Patriots have arguably the most complete offensive roster in the AFC. The defending AFC champs just made themselves harder to beat.

Why Did the Eagles Move Brown?

That is the question Philly fans are asking, and there are a few answers. The cap math after June 1 made the trade much cleaner, with the dead cap hit dropping to about $16.4 million. Brown had been openly frustrated. The team has Jalen Hurts locked up long term and a deep receiving corps already in place with DeVonta Smith and others.

None of that fully softens the blow. Brown is one of the best players on the team. Trading him for picks in 2028 and 2027 means the Eagles are betting on the long view, even though their championship window is supposed to be open right now.

The trade also signals that Philly may be willing to let other star players leave when contracts get uncomfortable. Front offices around the league should be paying attention. The Eagles do not seem afraid to make unpopular calls.

For Brown, this is a fresh start. For Maye, this is the difference between a good offense and a great one. For the Eagles, this is a long-term bet that the front office better get right.

The AFC just got tougher. New England just got scarier. And AJ Brown just got a quarterback who is going to feed him on every drive.
