Justin Fields Traded to the Chiefs: Why He Chose to Back Up Patrick Mahomes

The New York Jets traded Justin Fields to the Kansas City Chiefs, and the return tells you everything about how his New York tenure went. The Jets got back a 2027 sixth-round pick. That is it.

Fields signed with the Jets last offseason and started nine games during the 2025 season, throwing for 1,259 yards, seven touchdowns, and one interception while adding four rushing scores. New York is now moving forward with Geno Smith as the starter, and Fields is off to Kansas City to back up Patrick Mahomes.

As part of the deal, the Jets are eating $7 million of his $10 million guaranteed salary while the Chiefs pick up the remaining $3 million. New York paid to make him someone else’s project.

Why Fields Wanted Kansas City

Here is the part that makes this interesting. Fields wanted to be in Kansas City. The 27-year-old said he chose the Chiefs specifically to learn from Mahomes, even though other teams were interested in acquiring him.

That is a mature decision from a former first-round pick who has bounced around and never quite found his footing as a starter. Sitting behind the best quarterback of his generation and learning how a championship operation runs is not a demotion. It is a chance to reset a career that was sliding sideways.

The Chiefs needed it too. Kansas City finally admitted it did not have a reliable backup behind Mahomes, and that matters more than ever with Mahomes rehabbing a torn ACL from late last season. Insurance behind a franchise quarterback is never a bad investment.

A Smart Move for Everyone

This trade works for all three parties, which is rare. The Jets clear most of a salary they did not want and move on with Geno. The Chiefs get a high-upside, athletic backup for almost nothing. Fields gets the best learning environment in football.

The bigger question is whether Fields can actually salvage his career in this role. Backing up Mahomes is great for development, but it also means he is not playing. If he ever wants another starting shot, he has to make the most of practice reps and any spot duty he gets while Mahomes finishes his recovery.

For now, this is the best possible landing spot for a quarterback who needed a fresh start. Andy Reid has rehabbed more than one passer’s reputation. Fields is the latest candidate.

A sixth-round pick for a former top-15 selection is a quiet ending in New York. In Kansas City, it might be a new beginning.
