Will the Chiefs Trade for Xavier Legette? Kansas City and Panthers Linked in NFL Trade Rumors
Week 1 is here, and the Kansas City Chiefs still have not solved their receiver problem. That is why Xavier Legette’s name keeps showing up next to theirs.
Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox put Legette on his 2026 NFL trade block big board entering Week 1, and Last Word on Sports followed by naming Kansas City and Las Vegas as the two most logical suitors. The Chiefs are the more interesting fit by a mile.
Legette was a first-round pick, 32nd overall in the 2024 draft, after Carolina traded up to get him. The Panthers kept a promise to the South Carolina product that night. Two years later, they are reportedly open to cashing him in.
The reason is depth. Knox laid it out plainly: “If Jalen Coker can stay healthy and free-agent addition John Metchie III can force himself into a prominent role, the Panthers could quickly decide to cash in Legette for draft capital. Teams looking to add a 6’1″, 221-pound pass-catcher with 4.39 speed should be willing to take a chance on him.”
Legette was close to being phased out entirely in Carolina before rookie Chris Brazzell suffered a season-ending injury. That injury bought him snaps. It did not buy him a long-term role.
Now look at Kansas City. The Chiefs did not sign or trade for a single new wide receiver this offseason. They ran it back with Xavier Worthy and Tyquan Thornton, whom they re-signed, and hoped continuity would carry the room.
Worthy is coming off an injury-riddled season. Rashee Rice is back, but he is entering the final year of his rookie contract and has not looked like his old self since a stretch of legal trouble and health issues. That is a lot of hope stacked on top of a lot of question marks for a team that still employs Patrick Mahomes.
So what does this actually cost? Knox pegs Legette’s value at a conditional 2027 fifth-round pick. Last Word suggests Kansas City might have to go up to a fourth if Worthy or Rice goes down midseason and the price spikes.
Either number is nothing. A fifth-rounder for a former first-round pick with 4.39 speed is the kind of low-risk swing contending teams make every October. If it works, Mahomes has another vertical threat. If it does not, the Chiefs are out a Day 3 pick they were going to spend on a special teamer anyway.
Here is my take: this trade should happen, and it probably will not happen this week. Carolina has no reason to move him in September when the market gets better in late October, and Kansas City has no reason to pay before it sees whether Worthy and Rice hold up. The natural window is the trade deadline.
The bigger question is whether Legette is worth fixing. He has not been a productive NFL receiver. The traits are loud, the tape is not, and the Panthers drafting Brazzell tells you what they think of his ceiling. Kansas City has a decent record of getting more out of athletic misfits than the team that drafted them, but Andy Reid’s staff is not a magic wand.
Still, when the alternative is trusting a receiver room this thin to keep pace in the AFC, a fifth-round lottery ticket is an easy yes. Watch this one in late October.
