Chiefs Sign Cornerback L’Jarius Sneed to One-Year Reunion Deal

Kansas City is bringing back a familiar face. The Chiefs have agreed to terms with cornerback L’Jarius Sneed on a one-year deal worth up to $5 million, reuniting the two-time Super Bowl champion with the team that drafted him in 2020.

Sneed left Kansas City after the 2023 season when the Chiefs traded him to the Tennessee Titans rather than pay him on a long-term extension. The Titans gave him a four-year, $76 million deal. Two injury-marred seasons later, Sneed is back on a prove-it contract for a fraction of the money.

For Kansas City, this is exactly the kind of move Brett Veach has built his cap management around. Take a flier on a player you already know, structure the deal to protect the team if the production does not show up, and let the locker room culture do its work. Sneed knows the building, knows the system, and knows what Steve Spagnuolo expects from a starting outside corner.

The fit makes sense schematically. The Chiefs have invested in their cornerback room over the past two offseasons, but they have lacked a true CB1 since Sneed left. Trent McDuffie has been excellent inside, but no one outside has emerged as a consistent answer against top wide receivers. If Sneed is healthy, he gives the defense a complete man-to-man cover corner who can travel with No. 1 receivers.

The if is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Sneed played just nine games in 2024 and 12 games in 2025 due to a recurring quad issue that bothered him throughout his tenure in Tennessee. He turns 29 in January, which is not old by NFL cornerback standards, but durability is the real question.

If he can stay on the field, the Chiefs got a steal. If he cannot, they spent $5 million on a depth piece. Either way, it is a low-risk swing at a high-upside player, and it shows the rest of the AFC that Kansas City is still operating with the same playbook that has produced three Super Bowl titles in the Patrick Mahomes era.
