Calais Campbell spoke publicly for the first time on Tuesday about the family tragedy that has consumed his life for the past two months.
The Baltimore Ravens defensive end’s mother, Nateal Campbell, passed away in July after being found unresponsive with cuts on her neck. His brother, Ciarre Campbell, was found inside the residence and has been charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a knife.
Ciarre Campbell remains in custody at the Fulton County Jail in Georgia after his attorney withdrew a request for bond.
Campbell Addresses It Directly
“I just wanted to say these last couple months have been pretty tough for me and my family,” Campbell said to reporters on Tuesday. “But I’ve been working through it and I really appreciate all the love and support and the prayers that have been coming from all over, really from all the NFL community, all the fan bases. So I appreciate the prayers. Continue praying for us because we need it.”
Campbell did not go into details about the case or his brother. He did not need to. Anyone who has followed the story understands why he chose brevity over speeches.
He Plans to Play
Despite everything, Campbell told reporters he intends to play this season. He talked about football as a place that brings him joy. “I love the game of football a lot and it is a place that brings me joy. This is a very fun place for me to be. And so playing football has been great for me,” he said when asked whether he had considered sitting the year out.
That is a real answer, not a scripted one. For a lot of players, the field becomes the safest place in the world during personal chaos. Campbell sounds like one of them.
The Football Side
Campbell is a former Defensive Player of the Year candidate, a six-time Pro Bowler and one of the most respected players in the sport. He was with the Ravens from 2020 to 2022 and rejoined the team this offseason on a one-year deal after spending 2025 with the Arizona Cardinals.
Baltimore opens the regular season against the Indianapolis Colts on the road on September 13. Ravens fans are going to give Campbell an enormous ovation when he is introduced at M&T Bank Stadium for the home opener, and it will be deserved.
Perspective
This is a reminder that the guys on your television every Sunday are dealing with real life the same as everyone else. Campbell has been in the league for 18 years. He has earned more than $150 million. None of that insulates him from what has happened to his family.
What he does have is a locker room full of teammates who have been checking in, a coaching staff that has given him space, and a community of fans who have shown up for him. His public thanks on Tuesday made it clear those things have mattered.
The Ravens will lean on him this year for football reasons. He will lean on them for reasons that go a lot deeper than football. Both things can be true, and both things sound like they already are.
