Are the Buccaneers bringing Jameis Winston back in 2020?

This past season Winston showcased precisely what makes him one of the most polarizing young players in the NFL today.

With Winston, the highs are always very high and the lows are consistently very low.

For example, this past year Winston became the first quarterback since 1988 to throw 30 interceptions. That is bad. However, 2019 also marked the time when the former Florida State star became the first Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback to throw for 5,000 yards. That is good.

Tampa Bay is now faced with a tough decision: should the organization stick with Winston and hope he learns something from head coach Bruce Arians? Or is it time to cut all ties?

Former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer does not know what direction the Bucs are leaning in. What he does know, though, is that if they retain Winston, he will eventually come to thrive under Arians.

Appearing on the Rich Eisen Show this week, Palmer emphasized what a great learning opportunity playing under Arians is.

“I believe he’ll have a big jump if he’s back in Tampa with Bruce,” he said.

“Mentally, it’s such a difficult offense. It is not easy. … It’s not a simple offense to just pick up and start off year one and go out there and have a Pro Bowl year. It takes years. It takes years for the quarterback, and it takes years for the guys outside.

“You need time, you need experience within that system, and that’s something you don’t have in year one,” he continued.

“You need year one to go back and watch the film and see yourself doing it wrong and the receivers seeing themselves do it wrong, and then year two things really start to click.

“That chemistry starts to develop, and that trust, and that confidence in the offense starts to develop. If Jameis is back in Tampa, I would expect year two to be a massive year for him.”

While there is a lot of bad that accompanies Winston, there is also no denying the sheer amount of talent he has. If he could just put it all together, the 26-year-old could quickly become one of the league’s most dangerous players.

Barring some sort of inexplicable catastrophe, look for the Buccaneers to make every effort to retain Winston for 2020-21.
