The Cleveland Browns have officially made their choice, and it is going to make a lot of people angry. The team named Deshaun Watson their starting quarterback for 2026, beating out rookie Shedeur Sanders in a competition that was closer than the final decision suggests.
Watson has not started a regular-season NFL game since 2024, when he tore his Achilles. He then re-tore it during rehab. His path back to being a functional starter has been longer and harder than anyone predicted when the Browns handed him the fully guaranteed contract that has since become one of the worst deals in league history.
Choosing Watson over Sanders is a specific message. The Browns are telling the room that the veteran gives them the best chance to win in Week 1. It is also, whether they will admit it or not, an acknowledgment that they cannot afford to fully bench the highest-paid quarterback in franchise history.
Sanders had a strong preseason. Not spectacular, not you cannot possibly keep him off the field strong, but encouraging. He showed poise. He made a couple of throws that the Cleveland offense has not seen in a decade. He also had reps that reminded everyone he is a rookie who took a long fall on draft night for reasons that were probably valid.
The Browns are betting that Watson’s health holds. That is a real bet. Multiple offseason reports suggested his mobility is limited. The Achilles has healed in the sense that he can play, but the explosive first step that made him elite in Houston is not coming back. The version of Watson they are starting is a pocket passer with a stiff lower body who needs a great offensive line and a great play caller.
Cleveland’s line is not great. Their play caller is not proven. That is the setup.
Sanders will get his shot. That is the sub-plot everyone is waiting for. The Browns have not committed to Watson beyond the first month, and if the offense sputters through September, the fanbase will be at full volume demanding Sanders by mid-October. This is Cleveland. Quarterback drama is the local sport.
What the coaching staff is trying to protect against is Sanders getting thrown into a broken situation before he is ready to survive it. That is a real coaching concern. It is also a great way to develop a rookie into a career backup by mistake.
The right call was probably to start Sanders and let him take his lumps. The safe call was starting Watson. Cleveland chose safe, which is the least Cleveland thing possible.
Week 1 is coming. The clock on Watson starts now, and it is not a long clock.
