Brandon Aiyuk Wants the Commanders Bad and the Commanders Want No Part of Him

Brandon Aiyuk has made up his mind. He wants to play for the Washington Commanders. The Commanders have made up their mind, too. They want no part of trading for him.
That is the dance going on right now in the NFL, and it has the makings of one of the most publicly awkward situations of the offseason.
The 49ers are done with Aiyuk. Back in January, general manager John Lynch told reporters it was safe to say Aiyuk had played his last snap with the team. San Francisco voided $27 million in guaranteed money for the 2026 season. The relationship is over. The question is just whether Aiyuk gets traded or released.
Aiyuk has spent the offseason making his preference loud. He posted a series of photos in a Washington Commanders hat. He confirmed it as his preferred destination. He shared footage of himself watching Commanders practice film. He posted a cryptic IG video that landed exactly the same week his June 1 trade window passed.
The logic is obvious. Aiyuk and Jayden Daniels were college teammates at Arizona State. The two of them have a connection that goes back years. Aiyuk thinks playing with Daniels would jumpstart his career. He is right. Daniels is one of the best young quarterbacks in the league and Washington’s offense is built to make wide receivers look great.
The problem is that Washington does not need Aiyuk. The Commanders have a young roster, a developing quarterback, and limited cap space. Adam Peters, the Commanders general manager, has shown no interest in trading draft capital for a 27-year-old wide receiver coming off a torn ACL.
The cleaner option for Washington is to wait. Aiyuk is going to get released by the 49ers eventually. The June 1 deadline passed, which means San Francisco can now split the dead money over two seasons instead of taking the full hit in 2026. That financial flexibility makes a release more likely, and a release means Washington can sign him as a free agent for nothing in return.
Aiyuk’s camp probably knows that. The cryptic posts and the social media campaign might be designed to push the 49ers toward cutting him sooner rather than later. Once he is a free agent, he picks his team. Washington becomes possible without any trade compensation required.
The Niners are not making it that easy. Lynch has held the position that they want a trade and will explore any team that calls. The Steelers have been mentioned as a possibility, with Aaron Rodgers in town and a need for a veteran receiver. The Patriots, the Jets, and the Bears have all been speculated about, but none of those teams are appealing to Aiyuk, who has been clear he wants Washington or nothing.
That stalemate is now the entire story. Aiyuk waits. The Niners hold. The Commanders smile politely. Everyone knows how it ends. The only question is which week of the summer it ends.
Aiyuk has the leverage of a player who has publicly named his destination. The Niners have the leverage of a team that controls his contract. The Commanders have the leverage of being the only team Aiyuk actually wants. Three sides, three positions, one outcome that everyone secretly agrees on.
Get the popcorn. This is going to be a slow summer for everyone except Brandon Aiyuk.
