Brandon Aiyuk wants out of San Francisco. Everyone knows it, including the 49ers themselves. The only question is where he lands.
The answer, increasingly, looks like Washington. Aiyuk has made no secret of his interest in playing with Jayden Daniels, his former Arizona State teammate turned reigning offensive rookie of the year. In multiple social media posts across the offseason, Aiyuk has essentially begged the Commanders to make a move, and he has publicly said he will not play another snap in the Bay Area.
The 49ers gave him another shove out the door last week when they voided $27 million in 2026 guarantees from his contract. The trigger, per CBS Sports, was Aiyuk skipping rehab sessions and declining team activities while working back from the ACL and MCL tears he suffered in October 2024. When your team pulls money out of your deal, the message is not subtle.
John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan have been telegraphing this outcome since January. Lynch essentially admitted Aiyuk’s time in San Francisco was done. But the Niners want a trade return, not a release, which is where the standoff gets complicated.
Washington is playing it cool. The Commanders are aware of Aiyuk’s preference and open to a deal, but they are not eager to absorb the remaining three years of his four-year, $120 million extension. Adam Peters would rather let San Francisco eat some of that money or, ideally, release Aiyuk outright so Washington can sign him on a prove-it deal.
That is the leverage battle. If the 49ers hold their ground and demand real draft compensation, Washington waits. If Washington waits long enough, the 49ers might blink and cut Aiyuk to get out from under the contract. Then the Commanders sign him for a fraction of the price.
The Jayden Daniels angle is the wild card. Daniels put up a Rookie of the Year season without a legitimate WR1 outside of Terry McLaurin. Pairing him with a healthy Aiyuk, still only 28, gives Washington’s offense a true two-receiver set that terrifies defensive coordinators. Kliff Kingsbury’s scheme with two X-caliber outside guys is a nightmare matchup.
Aiyuk is not going to be on the 49ers on opening night. That much is essentially decided. The only remaining question is whether he lands in Washington via trade or via free agency after a release. Either way, Jayden Daniels is getting his college running mate. And the Commanders offense is about to look scarier than it already did.
