Brandon Aiyuk Trade Feels Inevitable as 49ers Voided His 2026 Guarantees

Brandon Aiyuk’s days in San Francisco are running out. The 49ers receiver is the next obvious wide receiver domino to fall, and it might happen before training camp.

The 49ers and Aiyuk have clashed over his recovery from a torn ACL that ended his 2024 season. San Francisco was not happy with how the rehab was going, and the team voided his 2026 guarantees as a result. That is one of the most aggressive moves a team can make against a star player. It is essentially the front office saying we no longer fully trust you.

Voided guarantees are a contract penalty that lets the team get out of paying owed money without the player getting full protection. That move alone changes the dynamic. Aiyuk’s leverage is reduced. The 49ers’ leverage is increased.

The relationship has been complicated for over a year now. Aiyuk wanted to be paid like the top receiver in the league last summer. He got a deal, then got hurt, then watched his teammates carry on without him. He has been frustrated. The team has been frustrated. The contract drama has not been resolved.

The 49ers do not actually need Aiyuk on the roster the way they used to. They have Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, and a healthy Christian McCaffrey. The offense has weapons. What it does not have is the cap space to keep Aiyuk on his current deal once he is fully recovered.

Per multiple trade prediction markets, Aiyuk is one of the most-traded names in the league right now. Brian Thomas Jr., Justin Jefferson, and Aiyuk are the three most-discussed wide receivers in trade conversations. Of those three, Aiyuk is the most likely to actually be moved before camp.

Who would want him? Plenty of teams. The Chargers need a real WR1. The Bills could use another weapon for Josh Allen. The Bengals are always looking for receiver depth. The Steelers are perpetually one wide receiver short. Multiple legitimate destinations exist.

The trade price is the question. Aiyuk’s contract makes any deal complicated. The voided guarantees give San Francisco some flexibility, but the receiving team has to take on a massive deal and trust that Aiyuk’s knee is back to full health. Both are big asks.

The 49ers’ front office has been more aggressive than usual this offseason. The team has been quietly weighing roster decisions across the board. The window with Brock Purdy and this core is starting to feel finite, and San Francisco knows it. Moving Aiyuk before he becomes a sunk cost is the kind of move teams in win-now mode make.

For Aiyuk himself, a fresh start could be exactly what he needs. He has been frustrated in San Francisco for a year. A new team, a new offensive system, and a clean slate might unlock him. He is still a 25-year-old wide receiver with star talent. He just needs the right situation.

The August 3 NFL trade deadline is still two months out. Aiyuk does not need to be moved that quickly. The earlier the better for both sides. If he is going to play for a new team in 2026, getting there in time for training camp would help everyone.

The 49ers will probably listen to any reasonable offer between now and late July. The market knows it. The conversation is happening. The Brandon Aiyuk era in San Francisco feels like it is ending, one quiet contract decision at a time.
