Bo Nix Broke a Broncos Quarterback Record With a 62-Yard Touchdown Run: What It Means for Denver
Two days before Denver played Arizona, Sean Payton was asked whether Bo Nix needed to run more. “It’s not on my top-10 list of things that we’re working on,” the coach said.
On Sunday in Glendale, Nix took off in the second quarter and did not stop for 62 yards. It was a touchdown, it put the Broncos up 13-6, and according to the team it is the longest run by a quarterback in franchise history.
The Run
Nix hit 19.9 mph on the play, per Next Gen Stats, and it was the longest touchdown on a quarterback scramble since 2016. It was the longest quarterback run in the NFL since Justin Fields went 67 yards in 2022, and the third-longest run by anyone this season, behind Kenneth Walker’s 76 and Bucky Irving’s 72.
Here is how unlikely that was. Nix had 22 carries for 37 yards in his first six games this season. He nearly doubled his rushing total for the year on one snap.
He also became the fifth quarterback in NFL history with both a passing touchdown and a rushing touchdown of at least 50 yards in the same game. The passing half was a 52-yard screen to RJ Harvey, the longest play of Harvey’s career. Denver had not produced a 50-plus-yard rushing touchdown and a 50-plus-yard passing touchdown in the same game since Week 15 of 2002.
Nix Needed a Game Like This
The quarterback finished 15 of 29 for 222 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions, plus 73 yards and a score on seven carries. The passing numbers are modest. They are also the best he has looked in a month.
Nix came in having thrown for 1,049 yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions in six games, a 79.4 rating, with weekly passing totals trending the wrong way: 131, 288, 186, 214, 123, 107. This is a quarterback who won 14 games in 2025, set a Broncos single-season record for quarterback wins, holds the NFL record for most comeback wins in a season at 12, and broke his ankle in the playoff win over Buffalo in January. He becomes extension-eligible after this season, and Denver holds a fifth-year option for 2028 if it would rather wait.
Payton, who has taken over the play-calling from first-year coordinator Davis Webb, was direct afterward. “It was good to see him play well and it was good to see us block well and make some plays down the field,” he said, adding that “the confidence inside of the building relative to his ability hadn’t changed at all.”
Denver Is 5-2 and the Defense Carried the Rest
Linebacker Alex Singleton had 19 tackles, 12 of them solo, with a sack and two quarterback hits. Denver produced three sacks and 12 quarterback hits and 377 total yards, and still managed 11 penalties for a season-high 114 yards. Wil Lutz went 3 for 3 on field goals and is now at 111 consecutive extra points, one short of the NFL record.
The Broncos have won three straight and sit second in the AFC West behind Kansas City. They did not get out clean. Receiver Jaylen Waddle left with a chest injury on a fourth-quarter reverse and did not return, defensive lineman Zach Allen pulled up with a hamstring, and cornerback Patrick Surtain II was downgraded to out before kickoff.
Arizona fell to 2-5 under first-year coach Mike LaFleur and has now lost 10 consecutive home games, a streak dating to September 2025. Jacoby Brissett went 27 of 48 for 272 yards with a touchdown to Trey McBride, who caught 10 passes for 111 yards. The Cardinals went 1 for 5 in the red zone. They are not scoring touchdowns, and that is a harder thing to fix than a quarterback who needed one big run.
