Bill Belichick Thinks Russell Wilson Is Best Player In NFL

With the New England Patriots set to take on the Seattle Seahawks this weekend, Bill Belichick offered his thoughts on the opposing quarterback.

In Belichick’s opinion, Russell Wilson may just be the best player in the NFL today.

“Honestly, I think he’s in a way underrated by the media and the fans, but I don’t see anybody better than this player,” he said.

That is high praise from a man known for being hard to impress.

“He can do everything,” Belichick continued.

“He’s got obviously great leadership, playmaking skills. He plays very well in the most critical situations in the game. His decision-making, running, passing.”

This past week, Wilson threw for 322 yards and four touchdowns on 31 of 35 passing. Thanks in large part to his leadership, Seattle made quick work of the Atlanta Falcons 38-25. For his troubles, Wilson was named the NFC Player of the Week.

Besides walking away with a win on Sunday, Wilson also became the second player in NFL history to record 30,000 passing yards and 4,000 rushing yards in his career.

Since 2016, Wilson has totaled the most completions with 132, passing touchdowns with 44, and passing yards on deep passes with 4,496.

“His passing numbers are extraordinary,” Belichick added.

“You can put him up against anybody since he’s been in the league, literally anybody, in almost any category, His winning percentage is impressive. He’s there for every game, never missed a game. He’s got a great ability to do the right thing at the right time. He has tremendous vision and sees the field extremely well.

“I don’t think there’s a better deep-ball passer in the league, in terms of decision-making and accuracy. He attacks literally every inch of the field.”

Belichick’s praise makes a lot of sense. His teams have squared off against Wilson’s Seahawks on two separate occasions in the regular season. Both times, Seattle has emerged victorious. Wilson ultimately threw for 641 yards and six touchdowns combined in those efforts.

When Belichick and Wilson collided in Super Bowl XLIX, the latter kept his team in the outing throughout – before a late Malcolm Butler interception sealed the deal for his side. Nevertheless, Wilson still finished with two touchdowns, one interception, 247 passing yards and 39 rushing yards in the effort. He really made Belichick work for that win.

The Patriots and Seahawks have had some fun clashes over the years, and this Sunday’s game promises to be an interesting one.

New England quarterback Cam Newton made his debut last week and led the team to victory against the Miami Dolphins. The Patriots’ offense was extremely run-heavy in that outing, and it remains to be seen if that gameplan is sustainable over the course of the entire season. Implementing it against Seattle’s defense will be a fascinating test.

Along the same lines, it will be interesting to see how Wilson follows up on last week’s showing. NBC Sports NW Seahawks Insider Joe Fann appeared on the Brian Noe Show on Monday and described what Wilson’s offensive philosophy is going to look like this year.

“Russell Wilson talked all offseason long about wanting to score as many points as possible and wanting to be as aggressive in quarters one through three as you are in quarter four,” he said.

The Seahawks are currently 4-point favorites heading into this weekend, but everything gets thrown out the window when these two teams meet.

Will Wilson’s reign of regular season dominance against the Patriots continue? Will Belichick be able to slow down the quarterback he has such immense respect for? A lot of questions are going to get answered on Sunday.
