The Atlanta Falcons will enter training camp with Tua Tagovailoa expected to compete with Michael Penix Jr. for the starting quarterback job. That was the plan when the team traded for Tua in the spring, and it is the plan Raheem Morris is sticking with as camp gets into padded practices.
This is a strange situation. Penix was the No. 8 overall pick in 2024 and started 11 games as a rookie in the second half of last season. He showed real flashes, a big arm, willingness to push the ball down the field, and a lot of the traits that made the Falcons draft him in a controversial spot in the first place. He also had turnover problems and looked overwhelmed at times, which is normal for a rookie.
Then Atlanta traded for Tua after Miami finally decided they had seen enough. Tua’s health history is a nightmare. He has had multiple concussions, a soft-tissue injury history that would fill a chapter of a medical textbook, and a game that depends heavily on rhythm and timing rather than escaping pressure. If he takes any real hit early in the season, the whole thing could be over.
But when Tua is healthy, he is a top-15 quarterback. He completes passes at an elite rate. He knows how to run a scheme. He has thrown for over 4,500 yards in a season more than once. In a functional offense with Bijan Robinson, Drake London, and Kyle Pitts, he is going to put up numbers.
Penix, meanwhile, has less experience but a higher physical ceiling. His arm is stronger. He is younger. He is the guy the Falcons drafted specifically to be the future of the franchise, and there is a real argument that starting him gives Atlanta the best long-term outcome even if it costs them a few wins in 2026.
Morris has been diplomatic in public. He says both quarterbacks are getting reps with the ones. He says the decision will be made based on training camp performance and preseason games. He says he trusts both guys to lead the team.
Behind the scenes, this is a critical decision for his job. Morris is on a hot seat if the Falcons underachieve again this year. Picking the wrong quarterback and losing a season would end his tenure. Picking the right quarterback and winning the NFC South would save it.
The smart money says Tua starts. He is the veteran, he is the more polished option right now, and the front office traded real assets to get him. Starting him and letting Penix develop for one more year is the safer play.
But if Penix has a great preseason and clearly wins the job, Morris might not have the political capital to sit him. The fans want to see the young quarterback, the media wants the storyline, and the ownership wants proof that the draft pick was worth it.
Either way, the Falcons have a real quarterback problem in the good sense. They have two of them. Whether that becomes a strength or a controversy is going to define the 2026 season.
