Anthony Richardson Trade Rumors Are Heating Up Around the Colts

The Colts spent the fourth overall pick on Anthony Richardson three years ago. He may not be on the team much longer.

Multiple reports this offseason have indicated that Indianapolis is open to moving Richardson, and the trade rumors have picked up steam in recent weeks. ESPN’s Bill Barnwell recently floated potential trade scenarios for the former Florida star, and the conversations around him have only intensified since.

This was not how it was supposed to go.

Richardson came into the NFL with as much physical talent as any quarterback in the 2023 draft class. He had elite athleticism, a strong arm, and the kind of upside that made teams overlook his limited college production. The Colts bet big on him. They picked him with the assumption he was a long-term franchise quarterback.

The early returns have been mixed at best. Richardson has dealt with multiple injuries and inconsistent play across his first two seasons. He has shown flashes, but he has not been the guy. The Colts have already brought in veteran competition, and the writing has been on the wall for months.

The trade market for Richardson is going to be interesting. He has the physical tools that quarterback-needy teams cannot ignore, and he is still on a cheap rookie contract. For a team willing to take on the development project, he is one of the cheapest paths to a potential franchise quarterback in the league.

The names mentioned in early speculation include the Browns, the Raiders, and a handful of other teams that have either openly admitted they need quarterback help or are quietly looking for it. Cleveland is the most logical landing spot given their recent quarterback chaos, but Las Vegas has the cap room and the willingness to take on developmental projects.

The Colts also have the Joe Flacco option in their back pocket, which is part of why they are willing to entertain the idea of moving Richardson. Flacco can play well enough to keep them competitive in the short term, and the rebuild around a new young quarterback might be the right call.

The other piece is the long-term draft strategy. If the Colts move Richardson now, they likely use the picks to either trade up for a different quarterback or stockpile assets for a future draft. The 2027 class is reportedly thin at the position, so there is no obvious reason to wait if you have decided to move on.

For Richardson personally, a fresh start might be exactly what he needs. The Indianapolis situation has been difficult. The offensive coordinator changes, the injury concerns, the constant scrutiny. A new environment with a coaching staff that believes in him might be enough to unlock the talent that made him a top-five pick.

The Browns make sense in that regard. They have desperately needed a franchise quarterback for years, and Richardson is still young enough to be that guy. Cleveland would essentially be betting that the development just did not work in Indianapolis, not that Richardson is fundamentally broken.

The next few weeks are going to be critical. NFL training camps open soon. The Colts have to decide whether they are committing to Richardson or moving on. The market is paying attention.

This is one of the more unusual trade conversations in the league right now. A former top-five pick, in his third year, already on the market. It does not usually happen this fast.
