A.J. Brown to the Patriots? Framework Reportedly in Place for Eagles Trade Before June 1 Deadline

The A.J. Brown sweepstakes might be approaching the finish line, and the answer might be Foxborough.
Multiple NFL reports surfaced this week suggesting that the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots have a framework in place for a trade that would send the star wide receiver to AFC East. The two sides are still negotiating compensation, but they are close enough to make the rumor real. NFL insider Josina Anderson reported the teams “have recently grappled over the component of the total trade compensation,” which could include a swap of picks alongside whatever draft capital changes hands.
The most important date in this story is right around the corner. June 1 is the deadline that makes everything cleaner for Philadelphia. If the Eagles trade Brown before June 1, his cap charge accelerates and Philly eats a $43.3 million dead cap hit on the 2026 books. If they trade him after June 1, that dead cap drops to $16.3 million and gets spread across 2026 and 2027. The math gets manageable.
So expect news this week. The Eagles want to move Brown. The Patriots want to acquire him. The framework exists. The only question is whether the two front offices can split the difference on compensation in time.
Why is Philly trading Brown? Two reasons. First, the locker room dynamic with Jalen Hurts has been frayed for over a year. Brown has been openly frustrated about target share and game plans. After Hurts and the Eagles fell short of expectations in 2025, head coach Nick Sirianni would not guarantee Brown’s return when asked at the end of the season. That was the public signal. The trade buzz has only grown since.
Second, Brown is 28 and on a contract that runs through 2029 at top-of-market money. The Eagles can recoup high-end draft capital while still owing Brown some serious salary in the back half of his deal. Selling now lets them get something meaningful before the contract becomes harder to move.
For the Patriots, this is the move that could fast-track their next era. Drake Maye is entering Year 2 after a promising rookie season under center. The Patriots moved on from Stefon Diggs in March and have been quietly searching for a true No. 1 receiver ever since. Brown is exactly that. He just turned 28. He has been a Pro Bowl receiver three times. He gives Maye a No. 1 target that opens up everything else in the offense.
Maye is already publicly supportive. “If he ends up being on our team, great,” the second-year quarterback told reporters last week. That is about as much enthusiasm as a young quarterback can show without crossing into tampering territory.
The hangup, per Pats Pulpit, is that Philadelphia reportedly wants a 2027 first-round pick and the Patriots have been reluctant to give that up. The two teams might settle on a 2027 second and a 2028 conditional pick, or some combination of selections that gets both sides comfortable. A swap of late-round picks could be in play too.
If this trade happens, the AFC East gets a lot more interesting. The Bills already have Mike Vrabel’s revamped Patriots on their schedule twice a year. Adding Brown to that offense changes the conversation about who has the most dangerous passing attack in the division. Watch the wires this week. June 1 is going to set the tone for the entire NFL summer.
