Aaron Donald Cryptic Post After Myles Garrett Trade Has Rams Fans Buzzing

Aaron Donald is supposed to be retired. He stepped away after the 2023 season. He has been enjoying life as a dad and a businessman. He has never publicly hinted at a return.
But that post on social media after the Myles Garrett trade has Rams fans imagining things.
Donald posted a smiling photo of himself in a Rams cap shortly after the news of the Garrett trade broke. No caption. No context. Just a picture and a smirk. In the NFL universe of 2026, that is enough to set off a wildfire of speculation.
Let us be clear about what is actually likely here. Aaron Donald is not coming back. He is 35 years old. He retired healthy, which is the smart way to retire as a defensive lineman. He has spoken openly about wanting to spend more time with his family. He has zero financial reason to play. He has zero competitive accomplishments left to chase. He is one of the most dominant defensive players in NFL history and has nothing left to prove.
But the post is interesting because Donald never posts anything like that. He is private. He does not engage in NFL drama on social media. He has been careful to maintain his post-football persona. So when he posts a Rams cap photo on the day the team trades for the best pass rusher in the league, you can see why fans are losing their minds.
The realistic interpretation is that Donald was simply showing support for his former team. He spent his entire career with the Rams. Sean McVay is a friend. The front office took care of him. He won a Super Bowl in Los Angeles. He cares about the franchise. The trade was a major moment. A photo with the team cap is a way to say I am with you guys.
The unrealistic but fun interpretation is that he is hinting at a part-time comeback. Some pass rushers have come back in limited roles, played a few games, and gone back into retirement. JJ Watt has flirted with it. Julius Peppers did something similar near the end. There is precedent for a star defensive player doing a partial year on a contender.
If Donald did come back, the Rams’ defense would be the best unit in the league by a wide margin. Garrett and Donald on the same line is a video game scenario. Quarterbacks would not survive. The Rams would instantly be Super Bowl favorites.
That is not happening. Almost certainly. Probably not. Definitely unlikely.
But the Rams already have one of the great defenses in football, and they may have just gotten the cherry on top with Garrett. Donald or no Donald, McVay’s window is wide open. The post probably means nothing.
The fans are still going to dream. That is what offseasons are for.
