Kevin Thomas Commits to North Carolina: What the 4-Star Forward Means for Michael Malone’s Roster

Michael Malone keeps stacking the deck in Chapel Hill.

Four-star small forward Kevin Thomas committed to North Carolina on Tuesday, becoming the fourth high school recruit to join Malone’s 2026-27 roster. Thomas, a 6-foot-6 wing out of Monteverde Academy, averaged 15.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 2.0 steals per game last season. He is a top-100 national prospect and the latest sign that Malone is building something real in his first full offseason as head coach.

Thomas was originally committed to LSU. He decommitted in March after the Tigers fired head coach Matt McMahon, and North Carolina moved quickly. Thomas visited Chapel Hill, connected with the staff, and made his decision. He already has an existing relationship with UNC transfer Matt Able, his former teammate at Sagemont Preparatory School in Weston, Florida, which made the transition easier.

He joins a 2026-27 recruiting class that already includes forward Maximo Adams, guard Malloy Smith, and center Sayon Keita. That is a four-man high school class for a program that is simultaneously retooling through the transfer portal. Malone is not picking one lane. He is recruiting high school talent and portal players at the same time, which is the only way to build a competitive roster in the modern college basketball landscape.

Thomas gives UNC something it needed: a versatile wing who can score from multiple levels. At 6-foot-6 with a 2.0 steal average, he has the length and instincts to play on both ends of the floor. He is not a one-dimensional shooter. He can put the ball on the floor, get to the rim, and create for teammates. That kind of player is hard to find in high school recruiting, and Malone landing him after a decommitment from an SEC program is a strong indicator of where the UNC brand stands right now.

Malone took over a program that needed direction. He is providing it. The 2026-27 roster is not finished, and there will be more additions through the portal, but the high school foundation is getting stronger with every commitment. Thomas is the best of the four, and if he develops the way his high school tape suggests he can, he will be a contributor from day one in Chapel Hill.

North Carolina is not back yet. But it is heading in the right direction, and Kevin Thomas is the latest reason to believe Michael Malone knows what he is doing.
