John Calipari Loses Kentucky Star To Transfer

John Calipari lost a Kentucky star to transfer this week.

On Friday, Kahlil Whitney announced that he was heading elsewhere.

The surprising midseason move caught a lot of people off guard.

While Whitney had pretty much completely fallen out of the rotation, the timing of the transfer was still a bit peculiar.

Over the past two outings he participated in he only played four minutes.

Whitney played in all 18 of Kentucky’s games this year, but averaged just 3.3 points and 1.7 rebounds in 13 minutes per outing.

When making his announcement, Whitney said that he wanted to put himself “back in the best position possible” to progress as a basketball player.

Following Whitney’s announcement, Calipari issued a statement regarding the move.

“First and foremost, Kahlil is a great kid,” he said.

“This is tough for me because Kahlil is a tremendous person who is going to do great things.

“I certainly don’t want to see him go because I wanted to continue to coach him, but I understand his decision and, as we always do here, will support him in whatever way we can,” he continued.

“As I told Kahlil today, I hope he goes on and does his thing and makes us all proud.

“I know he will stay in touch with us and I know our fans will continue to support him as he takes this next step.”

A final decision on where Whitney will transfer to should come some time this week.
