Are the New York Giants hiring a Super Bowl winning coach?

Baylor head coach Matt Rhule has been thought of as the favorite for New York’s head coaching vacancy, but a new candidate has emerged.

On Friday, the team announced that it was interviewing former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy.

McCarthy put together a 125-77-2 record with Green Bay during his time there. He also won a championship there.

The Packers ultimately parted ways with McCarthy due to some fit issues, but as a football mind, he has always been very highly regarded.

McCarthy was thought to be one of the favorites to take over as head coach for either the Cleveland Browns or Carolina Panthers. Although he obviously lacks the “wow factor” of an Urban Meyer, what he does have going for him is a proven ability to win at the NFL level.

McCarthy had a complex relationship with Aaron Rodgers that really deteriorated towards the end, so it would be interesting to see how he would work with young Daniel Jones.

Rhule is likely still the favorite to ultimately land the Giants job, but McCarthy might actually be the better fit from a purely on-the-field standpoint.
