Winnipeg Jets Troll Miami Heat With Fake LeBron James YouTube Stunt

The Miami Heat gave the entire sports world a gift on Tuesday when their YouTube page briefly listed a “LeBron James Introductory Press Conference” scheduled for July 27. It got deleted fast. The screenshots did not.

On Wednesday, the Winnipeg Jets decided they wanted in on the joke. The NHL club’s official YouTube channel added its own scheduled stream titled “LeBron James Introductory Press Conference,” also set for July 27.

It is the kind of low-effort, high-reward troll that hits perfectly in a slow summer sports news cycle. The Jets have zero business in the LeBron sweepstakes, which is exactly why the joke works.

The original Heat mishap set the entire NBA world on fire. Fans immediately assumed it was proof that Miami was already lining up a LeBron announcement. A Heat spokesperson told the Miami Herald that the post was a mistake by the social media team and that there was “currently no validity” to the video.

Miami then posted a job opening for a Director of YouTube Strategy hours after the slip. If that timing was coincidence, it was cosmic-level coincidence.

The Jets clearly saw the whole soap opera play out and could not resist. Their YouTube stunt is not backed up by any actual insider report or trade rumor. It is a hockey team having a laugh at the expense of an NBA team that just did the internet’s job for it.

For anyone keeping score, LeBron has not spent a single second of his career in a Winnipeg Jets sweater. He is unlikely to start now. But the Jets do at least get one thing right. If a franchise is going to embarrass itself online, sometimes the best response from a rival is to steal the joke and make it your own.

The Heat, for their part, are still very much a real destination for LeBron. ESPN’s Adam Schefter revealed on Wednesday that he received a text back on June 30 telling him to expect LeBron to sign in Miami. That tip continues to age well as fresh evidence of Miami interest keeps leaking out.

The Heat, Cavaliers, Warriors and 76ers are considered the four finalists. Miami has quietly become the favorite because the Heat also swung the trade of the summer, landing Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Bucks. A LeBron, Giannis and Bam Adebayo core is legitimately terrifying for the rest of the East.

Meanwhile, in Winnipeg, the Jets got themselves free promotion at almost no cost. Every LeBron watcher on X spent the day sharing screenshots of their YouTube page. The Miami Heat did the work. Winnipeg cashed the check.

This is how modern sports social media works. You wait for a rival to hand you a moment, and then you jump on it before the timestamps grow cold. The Jets nailed the assignment.

As for LeBron, the actual decision could come at any moment. When it does, one of these YouTube pages is going to be right. The other one is going to remain the internet’s favorite hockey joke of the summer.
