According to a report from veteran NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Miami Heat are considering Young as a backup plan if they cannot land Giannis Antetokounmpo. That is the wildest sentence anyone has typed about Miami’s offseason so far.
Let me explain why this is interesting. Young, 27, was traded to the Washington Wizards by Atlanta in January in one of the most shocking moves of the season. He has a $49 million player option this summer with a June 23 deadline to decide. Most around the league assumed he would opt in and let Washington try to extend him long term.
That may not be how it plays out anymore.
The Heat are in a weird spot. Pat Riley and Andy Elisburg have been chasing Giannis for over a year. If that pursuit fails, and the latest indications suggest Boston is the favorite there, Miami needs a fallback star. Young is one of the few realistic options on the market who can be acquired without giving up an enormous package.
Would Young actually fit in Miami? That is where things get complicated. Bam Adebayo is a defense-first big who would not pair naturally with a guard who plays heavy on-ball offense. Tyler Herro would also need a clearer offensive role. The fit on paper is not perfect.
The fit makes more sense culturally than tactically. The Heat are looking for a star who actually wants to play in Miami. Young grew up a Heat fan, has talked publicly about the team, and would view the move as a homecoming opportunity even though he is from Oklahoma.
Washington’s perspective matters too. New GM Will Dawkins has been signaling for months that the Wizards plan to build around Young long-term. They have the cap room. They have draft picks. They have a young roster that needs a veteran star to lead it.
If Young opts in on June 23, the Wizards control his future. If he opts out, he becomes a free agent and Miami can sign him outright, although that would require the Heat to create real cap room.
The Giannis race is what makes this all happen. If the Bucks deal Antetokounmpo to Boston, Miami has to pivot fast. Trae Young would be the most realistic name available, and the Heat have already done the early work to know what a deal might look like.
