Spurs vs Thunder Game 6 Preview: Can Wembanyama Avoid Elimination at Home?

The San Antonio Spurs face elimination for the first time this postseason. They get to do it at home. They are going to need Victor Wembanyama at his absolute peak to extend the series.

Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals tips Thursday at 8:30 PM ET on NBC and Peacock, with the Thunder leading 3-2 after a 127-114 win in Game 5. The series has been physical, weird, and trending toward the Thunder for two games now.

Wembanyama’s Game 5 was rough. He shot 4-for-15. Most of his 20 points came from the foul line, where he was a perfect 12-for-12. The Thunder have figured out a defensive approach: Isaiah Hartenstein and Chet Holmgren take turns body-checking him, the help defenders rotate fast, and the Thunder force Wemby to score from outside the paint.

It has worked. Across the last two games, Wembanyama is shooting under 30 percent from the floor. The Spurs’ half-court offense bogs down when Wembanyama is not getting easy looks, and OKC’s defense has made everything difficult.

Here is the good news for San Antonio. Historically, when Wembanyama takes 15 or fewer field goal attempts in a non-injury game, he averages 28 points in his next outing. He is wired to respond to bad shooting nights. Game 6 in San Antonio, with the season on the line, is exactly the spot where Wemby has historically delivered.

The Spurs also have De’Aaron Fox, who has been their second-best player. Fox has the speed to push pace before OKC’s defense gets set, and he has been comfortable running pick and roll with Wembanyama all series. If Mitch Johnson can get Fox 20 to 25 shots and Wembanyama 22 to 25 looks, the math works.

The bigger problem is depth. The Thunder are deeper at almost every position. Jalen Williams returns to the starting lineup after missing Game 5. Ajay Mitchell may be back too. Jared McCain, who absorbed a lot of physical play late in Game 5, was sensational with 20 points in his first career playoff start. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is still MVP-caliber.

That depth is why the Thunder are favored. Books have OKC at minus-150 to minus-170 across most sportsbooks. The Spurs are home dogs, which feels off for a team led by Wembanyama, but the betting market is reflecting the depth and the experience gap.

The keys to the game are simple. San Antonio needs Wembanyama to get going early. He cannot have another 4-for-15 game and expect to win at home. The Spurs need to win the rebounding battle, which they lost in Game 5 by double digits. They need to take care of the basketball, which has been a weakness all series. And they need someone besides Wemby and Fox to step up. Devin Vassell or Stephon Castle has to score 15-plus.

For the Thunder, the plan is the same. Pound Wembanyama physically. Run their offense through Shai and Chet. Get to the free throw line. Survive whatever the home crowd throws at them. They have been the best road team in the playoffs.

If the Spurs win, this becomes a Game 7 in Oklahoma City on Saturday. Either matchup the Knicks would prefer Wembanyama, because the Spurs are younger and less battle-tested.

For now, all eyes are on AT&T Center. Spurs Nation will be loud. Wemby will be focused. The Thunder will be ready. Game 6 is going to be a war.
