Warriors Ready to Give Steph Curry a Max Extension: Details on the Deal Golden State Is Prepping
Steph Curry is not going anywhere. The Warriors are prepared to hand him a max extension the moment he becomes eligible, and Curry has every indication he wants to finish his career in Golden State.
Anthony Slater of ESPN reported Thursday that the franchise is “very open” to a new max contract extension for Curry. The team is willing to offer a one-year or two-year max, with Curry becoming extension-eligible in August. He is currently under contract for one more season at $62.6 million.
That is a lot of money for a guy about to turn 39. The Warriors do not care.
Why Golden State Is All-In on Steph
Curry averaged 26.6 points last season on shooting splits of 47/39/92. Those numbers would be elite for a 25-year-old. For a guy about to enter Year 18, they are absurd.
The knee injury that limited him to 43 games is the real concern. Golden State is betting that a reduced regular-season workload, better rehab management, and roster help will keep him upright for the playoffs. That is the calculation with every aging star, and Curry has earned the benefit of the doubt.
The other factor is culture. Curry has been the face of the franchise for a decade and a half. He built the modern Warriors. He made Steve Kerr’s system work. He turned Draymond Green from a second-round pick into a Defensive Player of the Year. Letting him leave in free agency is not an option this front office would ever consider.
What the Numbers Look Like
A one-year max extension tacked onto his current deal would put Curry around $70 million for the 2027-28 season. A two-year extension would push him past $140 million in total. Either way, this is the biggest paycheck the NBA has ever offered a player his age.
Golden State has flexibility on the cap sheet with Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins on movable contracts. Adding one more year of Curry does not lock them into a rebuild. It gives them cover to make one more title run with the roster they know how to run.
The Warriors also just watched LeBron James take an $8 million-per-year deal in Philadelphia to chase a ring. Curry is not going to do that. He has earned his money the hard way and the Warriors are going to pay him in full.
The Bigger Picture
This extension talk comes as the Warriors are reportedly weighing whether to chase Anthony Davis out of Washington. The Wizards are not interested in trading him yet, but Golden State keeps circling. If the front office is willing to hand Curry a full max deal, they are clearly still operating in win-now mode.
Combine that with the LeBron chase, which fell through, and it is clear this organization is not ready to hand the keys to the next generation. Jonathan Kuminga can wait. Brandin Podziemski can grow into his role. The window belongs to Steph for at least two more seasons.
Curry has hinted at wanting to skip the 2026 All-Star Game to rest his body. That is a reasonable move for a guy his age with a max extension on the table. Save the mileage for April and May.
The Warriors dynasty is not what it was in 2018, but the story is not over yet. Steph is going to be a Warrior for life. Golden State is going to make sure of it.
