Spurs Sign Tobias Harris to $31 Million Deal After Missing NBA Finals

The San Antonio Spurs are doubling down on their contention push. Fresh off a run to the NBA Finals that ended with a five-game loss to the New York Knicks, San Antonio agreed to a $31 million deal with veteran forward Tobias Harris.

Harris fits the exact profile the Spurs need. He can space the floor, he can put the ball on the deck, he can defend at his position, and he brings playoff experience to a young core that just found out how tough Finals basketball really is.

Victor Wembanyama is the whole story here. Everything the Spurs do from now on is designed to give their generational talent the best possible chance to win. Wemby made the leap last year. He is now a legitimate top-five player in the league. Adding shooters and veterans around him is how you extend the window.

Harris has been the subject of plenty of criticism during his time in Philadelphia and Detroit. He was overpaid for years. His playoff performance often fell short. But at $31 million on a shorter deal in San Antonio, he becomes a much more reasonable value. He does not have to be a star. He just has to be the fourth or fifth best player on a real contender.

The Spurs already have their guard rotation in place. They have their franchise player. Now they are adding pieces that fit the exact skillset needed for playoff basketball. That is smart front office work.

Losing to the Knicks in five was a wake up call, but it also showed the Spurs how close they are. New York had veterans everywhere. The Spurs had youth and inexperience in the biggest moments. Adding Harris helps fix that.

He is 33 years old and does not have unlimited runway left. That works out for both sides. He gets a shot at a title. The Spurs get someone who can help right now without blocking any of their young talent from developing.

The Western Conference is a bloodbath. Denver reloaded. OKC is still built for a run. The Lakers are spending money. Even Golden State could get a boost if the LeBron talk becomes real. San Antonio needed to make moves just to stay in the picture. This is a smart one.

Harris signing does not put the Spurs over the top by itself. It does move them one step closer, and combined with what should be another leap from Wemby, it keeps them firmly in the title conversation. That is the goal.
