Spike Lee Says Knicks Are Harassing Him, Won’t Go To More Games
Spike Lee says New York Knicks owner James Dolan is harassing him and that he won’t go to any more games this year.
On Monday night, footage went viral of Lee seemingly being hassled by Madison Square Garden security. It was later explained that the famous director was simply being told that he needed to use a different entrance, but to Lee, a line was still crossed.
On Tuesday, Lee appeared on ESPN’s First Take and suggested that he was being “harassed” by Dolan, the owner of the Knicks.
“I’m being harassed by James Dolan,” he said. “I don’t know why.”
After video of Monday’s incident came out, some people mistakenly believed that Lee was being barred from the arena.
Brian Mahoney of The Associated Press ultimately made it clear that this was not the case, and that it was simply a disagreement over which entrance to use. This was seemingly confirmed when Lee was later seen at his normal courtside seat when the Knicks beat the Houston Rockets 125-123.
Still, Lee feels the way the situation was handled was improper. He also insists that Dolan wanted to have a conversation with him, but that he refused.
Because of what transpired this week, Lee says he is “done for the season” as it pertains to attending games.
This situation is eerily reminiscent of what happened three years ago between Dolan and Knicks legend Charles Oakley.
Oakley was ultimately escorted out of Madison Square Garden and subsequently arrested on third-degree assault charges.
Dolan went so far as to ban Oakley from the arena after the incident, but later lifted the ban. Oakley opted not to return on his own accord.
Public sentiment is obviously with Lee on this whole matter because of how awful the Knicks have been recently. Even with Monday’s big victory, the squad is still 19-42 on the year and holds the third-worst record in the conference.
The Knicks have not made a single playoff appearance since 2013.
