Peyton Watson is officially a Cleveland Cavalier, and the drama around how he got there is not going away.
Watson landed with the Cavs via a multi-team sign-and-trade this offseason, and he is getting a significant new contract to do it. The move brings a legitimate young wing defender into Cleveland’s rotation as they retool around Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, and Evan Mobley. On paper, it is a great addition.
Off the paper, though, the situation is messier. Denver Nuggets fans and the front office are still fuming that Watson sat out the 2026 playoffs despite what the team believed was a manageable hamstring strain. Watson strained his hamstring in early April, and Denver expected him back for the postseason. He never returned. The Nuggets lost in the first round to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Then this week, Watson’s agent Rich Paul went on his “Game Over” podcast with Max Kellerman and dropped a bombshell. It was Paul, not the Denver medical staff or Watson himself, who convinced Watson not to play in the postseason.
“When you’re dealing with those soft-tissue injuries, you have to be very careful in your return,” Paul said. “Guys want to play. You have to protect them from themselves in that moment because you’re up for a contract, and it’s the playoffs, and I’ve had a pretty good year, so I need to play. And it’s important to protect that.”
Paul was essentially admitting that he prioritized Watson’s next contract over Denver’s playoff run. From a business standpoint, it is a defensible position. From a Nuggets fan standpoint, it is infuriating.
Denver had reportedly been telling media that Watson had made a soft, self-interested call by sitting out. Now we know Paul was the driving force behind the decision. It does not fully absolve Watson, but it does shift the story in a real way.
The Cavaliers are the beneficiaries. They now have a 23-year-old wing with real defensive tools, a growing offensive game, and championship experience from the Nuggets’ 2023 title run. Watson fits perfectly next to Mobley on the defensive end, and his athleticism gives Cleveland another vertical threat around the rim.
The contract is significant. The exact terms have not been fully disclosed, but reports indicate Watson is getting a multi-year deal that will pay him top-of-the-market money for his position. That is the payoff Paul was protecting when he pulled Watson out of the postseason.
For the Nuggets, this is a rough offseason chapter. They lost Watson, they got embarrassed in the first round, and now they get to watch their former lottery pick play meaningful games elsewhere. The team is still competitive with Nikola Jokic anchoring the roster, but the depth has clearly taken a hit.
The bigger takeaway is a reminder of how much power agents wield in the modern NBA. Paul was open about the fact that he made a business call that superseded what the team wanted. In doing so, he essentially confirmed the worst suspicions the Nuggets had.
Cleveland is happy. Denver is bitter. Peyton Watson gets paid. Welcome to the modern NBA.
