Nets Issue Unexpected Kevin Durant Update

The Nets issued an unexpected Kevin Durant update this week.

When Durant went down with a ruptured Achilles in last year’s NBA finals, the expectation was that he would miss the entirety of the 2019-20 season. Moreover, it was assumed that the injury could even cost him a little of the following season.

Over the summer, Brooklyn made the decision to go out and acquire him knowing that.

On Thursday, team head coach Kenny Atkinson made a big announcement to the media: Durant was “progressing fantastically” and continues to get better and stronger by the day.

According to Atkinson, the organization is continuing to increase Durant’s rehab workload. As of now, he is officially able to participate in individual workouts.

This prompted an obvious follow-up question: is there any chance Durant returns sooner rather than later?

Atkinson was non-committal.

“I don’t think there’s been any thought there,” he replied.

Back in September, Nets general manager Sean Marks insisted that the team would not allow Durant to play this year.

“With Kevin, I think what we’re going to say is the expectations are that he’ll be out for the year,” he said at the time.

Brooklyn is currently 16-20 through 36 games. Amazingly, that places them at No. 8 in the Eastern Conference.

While Durant will likely not return this year, the Nets’ other big acquisition from this summer in Kyrie Irving is due back at some point in the new few weeks.
