3 Biggest Losers Of 2024 NBA Trade Deadline

The 2024 NBA Trade Deadline came and went this week with a certain amount of fanfare.

Some teams, like the New York Knicks, came out big winners. Not only did they secure OG Anunoby a few weeks ago, but on Thursday they traded away Evan Fournier and spare parts for Bojan Bogdanovic of the Detroit Pistons.

As New York gears up for the second half of the year, their roster looks absolutely stacked.

Conversely, three teams came away from this year’s deadline as huge losers.

The first is the Los Angeles Lakers. After endless speculation on what they would do ahead of Thursday, the purple and gold wound up doing bupkis. Apparently they had one trade on the table, only for Darvin Ham to veto it.

Beyond that they did nothing and are now hoping that they can fix their roster via the buyout market. There are currently three buyout candidates they are being linked to, but none will be able to save their 2023-24 campaign.

Aside from L.A. the Golden State Warriors also had a hugely disappointing deadline. They came in being connected to the likes of Dejounte Murray of the Atlanta Hawks, but in the end, they couldn’t close.

“We explored a lot and frankly there wasn’t a lot out there that we thought could improve us significantly at an appropriate price,” Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. told Anthony Slater of The Athletic.

Golden State is now 24-25 on the year, good for 11th in the Western Conference. They will almost certainly not make the playoffs in 2024.

Finally, the third biggest loser of this year’s deadline proved to be the Chicago Bulls. Not only are they still stuck with Zach LaVine, who they don’t want and who doesn’t want to be there, but they also didn’t improve the team at all.

Chicago continues to exist in a weird middle ground where the franchise is neither capable of competing for a title nor is in the midst of a rebuild. Basically NBA purgatory.

All in all, this was a rough week for all Lakers, Warriors and Bulls fans.
