Danny Green’s Very Honest Reaction To Lakers Trading Him

Danny Green’s Very Honest Reaction To Lakers Trading Him

Danny Green has a resume that is the envy of many around the NBA. The 11-year vet won a championship at the collegiate level with North Carolina, and then did it again in the pros with the San Antonio Spurs in 2014, Toronto Raptors in 2019 and Los Angeles Lakers in 2020.

Despite winning a title in LA this past season, Green was ultimately included in a trade between the Lakers and Oklahoma City Thunder. Shortly thereafter, the Thunder dealt him to the Philadelphia 76ers.

This week, Green opened up about how he really felt regarding all the moves that had been made over the past month.

“I wasn’t shocked,” Green told Melissa Rohlin of FOX Sports.

“I was just seeing where I was going. I was like, OK. Obviously, everybody is getting better. And I knew even when I signed (in LA), the contract that I signed for was going to be hard to maintain, was going to be hard to stabilize, especially with the pieces.”

Last year Green signed a two-year, $30 million deal with the Lakers that was set to pay him $15.4 million in 2020-21. At the time, given the team’s cap situation and what was available, it was regarded as a fairly solid transaction for all parties involved.

Green averaged 8.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.8 threes per outing in 2019-20, but he lacked the sort of consistency that many fans had hoped to see.

“Of course, any time you get a chance to win with a team, you want to try to run it back with that team,” Green added.

“You make a home with the organization, the team, the players, the roster and within the city. Obviously, it’s up and down with the city and the fans and things like that.

“But I built a home and I loved the area where I was living. Nobody likes to move. I think anybody would want to go back, especially with winning and a great city like that. But at the same time, I’m not mad about it. … I know exactly what I signed up for before I got here.”

As far as Green is concerned, there is no ill will towards the Lakers.

“There’s no love lost at all,” he said.

“You know, they gave me a contract that I never dreamed that I would ever get, and playing in a city I never thought I would play for and winning a championship. It just so happens that you can’t maintain that; that’s hard to do that.

“But I got a championship, I got a ring and I did get an unbelievable contract. I couldn’t dream as a kid — I never thought I’d be making that in my life.”

The Sixers obviously need three-point shooting around Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid, and it will be interesting to see if Green can return to his old sharpshooting form and provide that for them.
