76ers Get Unfortunate Joel Embiid Injury Update

The Philadelphia 76ers looked like one of the Eastern Conference’s best teams at one point this season.

After an offseason filled with drama and Joel Embiid beefing with yet another teammate, the Sixers seemingly found their footing after the James Harden trade.

Unfortunately, their year was derailed when Embiid suffered an injury and was forced to undergo a procedure to repair an injured meniscus in his left knee.

The expectation at the time was that the reigning NBA MVP would be out a while, but the hope was that he would make a speedier-than-anticipated recovery.

Unfortunately, it looks like that won’t happen.

According to Ramona Shelburne of ESPN, the best-case scenario now is that Embiid will be able to return in time for the final week of the NBA’s regular season.

“Well, he’s not anywhere close right now to coming back, but he is able get on the court and do some light work here,” Shelburne said.

“The hope that they have in Philly is that they can just stay in the mix for Joel Embiid to come back the last week or so of the season, at least where he has a chance to get back some conditioning before the playoffs.”

The Sixers are currently 36-29 and sit sixth in the East. A mere 5.5 games separate them from the second-place Cleveland Cavaliers, and 3.5 games separate them from the ninth-place Chicago Bulls.

At this point, Philly’s year could go either way.

If Embiid can return in time for the playoffs and is at full or near full health, the 76ers could make some noise.

But at the moment, it doesn’t look like Embiid is anywhere close to being at full health.

Will Embiid be able to come back in time to save the 76ers’ 2024 NBA campaign? An answer one way or the other is coming soon enough.
