Is Dwyane Wade’s trans daughter Zaya joining her local girls’ basketball team?
That is the latest rumor swirling around social media. However, thus far, there has been zero substantive evidence to back that up.
This week, MTO News suggested that a student at the 12-year-old’s school was indicating that Zaya may try out for her school’s girls’ basketball team.
Naturally the report spread online like wildfire, leading many to debate whether a trans girl should be permitted on the girls’ basketball team.
People’s personal opinions on the matter notwithstanding, the law is very clear on what Zaya is and is not permitted to do. One of the things she is permitted to do, per the California Education Code, is compete in sporting events based on her gender identity.
It is worth pointing out again, this entire idea is based on a report of an alleged student at Zaya’s school. Not exactly the most rock solid of sources.
All that being said, if Zaya wanted to join her girls’ basketball team – she would be able to do so freely under California state law.
