Washington Wizards Won the NBA Draft Lottery: Why AJ Dybantsa at No. 1 Is All But Certain

The Washington Wizards hit the jackpot at the NBA Draft Lottery, and now the basketball world gets to have the conversation it’s been waiting to have all season: AJ Dybantsa, going number one overall to Washington. After years of rebuilding, losing, and accumulating picks, the Wizards landed the most coveted prospect in the sport.

Washington became the first team since 2019 to land the top pick after finishing with the league’s worst record. For a franchise that hasn’t had a real reason for optimism in years, this is the kind of moment that changes the organizational trajectory.

Dybantsa is the right player to build around. The BYU sophomore finished the season averaging 25.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game while shooting 51 percent from the field. He’s 6-foot-9, explosive in transition, and showed defensive versatility that makes him a genuine two-way player at the next level.

He’s currently at -450 odds to go number one, about as close to a foregone conclusion as you get. But a CBS Sports combine report flagged something worth watching: the Dybantsa-to-Washington connection isn’t viewed as the absolute lock everyone assumed. The next five weeks before June 23 will generate new information.

For Washington, the pressure is now on the front office to surround Dybantsa with the right pieces. Landing the number one pick is the beginning of a rebuild, not the end of it. They have the cornerstone. Now they have to build the house around him.
