Washington Won the 2026 NBA Draft Lottery and the Wizards Just Got a Franchise-Changing Pick

The Washington Wizards just won the 2026 NBA Draft Lottery, and the entire timeline of their rebuild changed in one envelope.
Washington was the worst team in the league this year, finishing with the lowest win total in the East and a roster that was clearly built for ping pong balls. The lottery gods rewarded them. The Wizards are now on the clock with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, which begins June 23 on ABC and ESPN.
That is the kind of break a franchise like Washington needed. The Wizards have been stuck in the middle of the league for years, drafting in spots that gave them solid prospects but never franchise-altering talent. Now they have a top of the draft slot in a class that has real superstar upside at the top.
The class itself is considered strong at the top, which makes the No. 1 pick even more valuable. Multiple prospects are being projected as potential All-Stars, and the gap between the first overall pick and the rest of the lottery is meaningful. ESPN’s most recent mock draft has Washington taking the consensus top prospect, who is expected to be a positional difference-maker for the next decade.
The downside of the class is the depth. NIL money has pulled a record number of college players out of the draft this year. Three international players and 35 non-international players have withdrawn their names, which has thinned out the second-round talent significantly. That means the value of an early pick goes up. If you are not picking in the top 10, the talent drop is steep.
Washington is not worrying about that part. They are picking first. They get the player they want.
The bigger conversation in DC is what comes next. The Wizards have a young core that includes Alex Sarr, Bilal Coulibaly, Bub Carrington, and Kyshawn George. Adding a No. 1 overall pick to that group gives them the most promising young roster in the East. The question is whether ownership has the patience to build through the draft or whether they will look for a star to package picks for.
The trade chatter is already starting. Multiple teams have been linked to the No. 1 pick as a trade target. The Pelicans have draft capital. The Hornets have draft capital. Even contenders like the Celtics and Heat have been mentioned as potential buyers if Washington decides to flip the pick for an established star.
That is the math the Wizards have to do. Take the rookie and trust the rebuild, or use the pick as the centerpiece of a trade that brings in a proven All-Star.
Most teams in this position have chosen the rookie. The Spurs took Victor Wembanyama. The Thunder took Shai Gilgeous-Alexander a few years earlier. The Magic took Paolo Banchero. The track record of No. 1 overall picks has been strong, and franchises that have tried to trade out of the top spot have usually regretted it.
Washington will probably go the rookie route. The class is too good to pass on the top prospect, and the Wizards need a face of the franchise more than they need depth pieces. June 23 will tell us who that face is.
