The 2027 NBA Draft picture is coming into focus and Kansas freshman Tyran Stokes is running away with the No. 1 pick conversation. He is the highest-rated recruit in a decade and looks the part every time he steps on the floor.
Stokes was the top-ranked player in the 2026 recruiting cycle per 247Sports. He is a 6-foot-7 point forward with elite athleticism, real playmaking chops, and a frame that already looks NBA-ready.
Scouts have been saying his combination of size, feel, and burst does not really exist in any other prospect in the class. The 2027 draft was already viewed as top-heavy, and Stokes is the reason for that.
Kansas is going to be the story of the college basketball season because of him. Bill Self is going to build the entire offense around Stokes from day one and every scout in the league will be at Allen Fieldhouse this winter.
The 2027 class as a whole is considered a step below recent drafts. NBA teams are already whispering that after Stokes, the talent curve gets very flat very fast. That is the same pattern as the 2013 draft, which produced only one true superstar in a lottery full of solid role players.
Braylon Mullins at UConn and Thomas Haugh at Florida are the top returners on draft boards. Both were top-25 players in the 2026 class before deciding to stay in school for the extra developmental year.
The tanking teams should already be paying attention. If your season is going sideways by December, the reward at the bottom of the standings is one of the best prospects since Anthony Edwards.
The one caveat with Stokes is his shooting. If he cannot prove he can knock down open threes at Kansas, some teams will get cold feet on the top pick. That happened with Anthony Bennett a decade ago and has not been forgotten in front offices.
But for now, Stokes is the guy. And every bad NBA team is already calculating how to end up with him.
