NBA Draft

Tyran Stokes Headlines the 2027 NBA Draft as the Consensus Top Prospect

The 2027 NBA Draft has a headliner. Tyran Stokes, the Kansas-bound freshman forward, is the consensus top prospect entering his college season, according to early mock drafts from ESPN and Last Word on Basketball.

Stokes is a 6-foot-7 forward built like an NFL safety. His scouting profile is heavy on power, burst, and finishing through contact. He is not a shooter yet, but he does not need to be to be a top pick. He gets into the paint. He finishes. He rebounds. He plays with a physicality that translates to the next level immediately.

Bill Self is going to have fun with this. Kansas has recruited elite talent for two decades, but Stokes is a different level of ready. He should be the primary offensive engine for the Jayhawks from Day 1, playing next to Motiejus Krivas, the Arizona big who returned for another year but is still on the draft radar.

The 2027 class is being described by scouts as similar to 2024, a year in which there was no true consensus at No. 1 and teams were all over the board on how they valued the top talent. Stokes is the closest thing to a locked-in top-three pick, but there are legitimate arguments for other names.

Caleb Holt is one of them. The 6-foot-5 guard from Arizona blends strength, athleticism, and motor in a way that draws comparisons to peak Donovan Mitchell. If he shoots even 35 percent from three as a freshman, he could push Stokes for the top spot.

Braylon Mullins at UConn is the other name to know. The 6-foot-6 wing chose to return to school despite legitimate first-round buzz last year. His shooting is elite, and his defensive versatility gives him a two-way profile teams love. Dan Hurley will maximize him.

Alijah Arenas at USC and Jordan Smith at Arkansas round out the top freshmen class. Both are combo forwards with real ceiling. Both will need to prove they can shoot at the college level before entering the top-10 discussion.

The interesting piece of this class is depth. There is no LeBron. There is no Wemby. What there is instead is a group of eight to ten legitimate top-15 picks, all with different translatable skills. That makes the entire draft feel more like a puzzle than a lottery. Front offices are going to have very different boards.

For Stokes, the season starts in November. Kansas has a schedule loaded with marquee non-conference games. The College Basketball Playoff will be the ultimate showcase. If Stokes averages 18 and 8 while helping the Jayhawks compete for a Big 12 title, he will be the No. 1 pick in June 2027.

The tank races are still 18 months away. But the name at the top of the board is set.
