Tyran Stokes Leads 2027 NBA Draft Class: Why Scouts Are Already Comparing Him to Elite Wings
Tyran Stokes has already become the name every NBA front office is tracking. The 6-foot-7 point forward, headed to Kansas next fall, is the consensus top prospect in the 2027 NBA Draft class according to early mock drafts from ESPN, CBS, and multiple independent scouting services.
The comparisons are wild. Scouts have thrown out names like Jayson Tatum, Paul George, and even a young LeBron in terms of physical profile and skill overlap. That is a lot to put on an 18-year-old who has not played a single college minute yet, but the tape backs up the excitement.
Stokes checks every box the modern NBA cares about. He can create his own shot at any level. He handles the ball well enough to run offense in transition. He rebounds like a legit power forward. He guards multiple positions. And most importantly, his motor never stops.
His decision to pick Kansas over a stacked list that included Duke, North Carolina, and Kentucky was a story in itself. Bill Self is not usually the guy who wins these recruiting battles anymore. That he landed Stokes, and did so relatively early in the process, tells you the Kansas program is not going anywhere.
For Kansas, Stokes changes everything. The Jayhawks were projected as a top-15 team without him. With him, they immediately jump into national title conversations. The pieces around him include a returning starter at point guard and a solid frontcourt, which means Stokes will not have to carry the offense from day one.
The 2027 draft class is going to be interesting for a lot of reasons beyond Stokes. Braylon Mullins at UConn is another top prospect. Thomas Haugh at Florida returned to school and could climb boards. And international prospect Kosta Joksimovic has already established himself as the top overseas talent in the class after winning MVP at Adidas Eurocamp this summer.
But Stokes is the headliner. Whether he ends up as the actual number one pick will depend on injury luck, team fit, and the usual chaos that comes with the draft cycle. Right now, though, he has the profile of a legitimate franchise-changer, and the teams currently sitting near the bottom of the NBA standings are already thinking about tanking their way into position.
NBA general managers will be at Allen Fieldhouse this year in a way they have not been in a while. Stokes could easily average 20 and 8 as a freshman, and if he does, he is going to lock down the top spot on scouting boards by December.
