The NBA is officially done with the Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro drama. And no one is getting fined.
Shams Charania of ESPN reported the league statement on Wednesday. After discussions with both players and the NBPA, the NBA determined “everyone would prefer to move on from this unfortunate circumstance.” No further action will be taken.
Translation: it happened in Las Vegas, it stays in Las Vegas.
What Actually Went Down
The two former Miami Heat teammates got into a heated exchange during Summer League week in Vegas. Reports indicated Herro was upset that Adebayo did not publicly defend him when his name kept getting floated in trade talks.
There was also frustration on Herro’s end about feeling underappreciated inside the Miami organization. The Giannis Antetokounmpo trade did not help. Herro has been looking over his shoulder ever since the Heat made that blockbuster move, wondering if he would be the next domino to fall.
The confrontation was reportedly loud but never physical enough to draw serious concern. Still, video and eyewitness accounts made it embarrassing for both players.
Why No Discipline Was the Right Call
The league did not have great options here. The altercation did not take place on the court. It did not happen during an official NBA event. Both players are grown men, both wanted to move past it, and the union backed the decision.
Handing out fines would have added fuel to a fire that was already dying. The NBA made the mature call by essentially shrugging and getting out of the way.
The Bigger Problem in Miami
The league closing the case does not close the actual issue. Herro is still on the Heat. Adebayo is still on the Heat. Now they add Giannis, and the roster is going to spend an entire preseason answering questions about chemistry.
Erik Spoelstra will handle it. Spo always does. But there is a legitimate concern here about whether Herro can coexist with this new-look Heat team long-term, or whether the front office ends up moving him at the deadline anyway.
Trade rumors have surrounded Herro for months. The Adebayo altercation only put a spotlight on why. If he does not feel wanted, he will make it known. If Miami wants to build around Giannis and Bam, at some point they will have to decide whether that includes Herro or not.
What It Says About Miami’s Culture
The Heat pride themselves on quiet professionalism. Pat Riley has spent decades building the reputation of the “Heat culture.” An offseason blowup between two star teammates does not exactly fit that brand.
Riley will spin this in his usual smooth way. The players will show up to camp and say all the right things. Adebayo and Herro will pose for a photo, tell everyone the beef is squashed, and move on.
Bottom Line
The league is done. The players want it done. The story will die down over the next few days.
The bigger issue is not the altercation. It is what happens if Miami stumbles out of the gate. That is when this thing gets ugly again.
