Mark Cuban Gets Honest About Luka Doncic’s Weight Issues

Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic is a generational talent with the potential to change the NBA forever. He is already one of the most talented players the game has ever seen, and he is only 22 years old.

Unfortunately, one persistent issue has continued to follow Doncic around throughout the entirety of his short NBA career.

That issue? His weight.

Back in December, Doncic himself admitted that his weight needed to “get back on track” and that he took it easy “maybe too much” in the weeks between last year’s Olympics and Mavs training camp. These photos would back that assertion up.

This week, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban addressed Doncic’s weight issues in a fairly straight-forward manner.

“I think he was humbled a little bit,” Cuban said while appearing on 1310 The Ticket in Dallas. “I think he didn’t like being called out for his weight and other things, and it finally clicked that there’s a level of discipline that’s required.

“All athletes at his level go through it at some level, where things are just easy and you’re always used to being the best and you’re always used to getting all the accolades. Then when something doesn’t go according to expected, it makes you reconsider.”

This isn’t the first time that Cuban has acknowledged that Doncic got too fat over the offseason. In the past he has tried making excuses for it, but now it feels like all parties involved realize that it’s a problem that requires fixing.

At this point, Dallas feels one or two moves away from legitimately competing for a championship. Assuming, of course, Doncic gets his conditioning and work ethic in check on a regular basis.

Once that happens, we could be looking at a legitimate dynasty in the making.
