Luka Doncic Has One Demand for the Lakers Before Free Agency. The Front Office Has to Listen.

Luka Doncic is reportedly making one major request of the Lakers before he commits to a long-term future in Los Angeles. He wants a real second star alongside him, and he wants the front office to go get one this summer.

According to multiple reports, Doncic has communicated to Lakers brass that the current roster is not enough. He is not asking for cosmetic moves. He wants Rob Pelinka to swing big in free agency or via trade, ideally before he signs his extension.

That is fair. Doncic gave up everything to come to Los Angeles. He left Dallas, he embraced a new market, and he carried a banged-up Lakers team into the playoffs against a Thunder team that was built to win it all. He earned the right to set the bar.

The Lakers know it. LeBron is in the final stretch of his career. Austin Reaves wants a max. The team needs an interior anchor and a real third scorer who can take pressure off Doncic in playoff series. The current roster as built is not a contender.

Doncic is reportedly intrigued by potential targets like Walker Kessler, who is at odds with the Jazz, and by trade possibilities involving disgruntled stars elsewhere. The Lakers have the picks and the matching salaries to be a player in any major deal.

The risk for Los Angeles is that if Pelinka does not act, Doncic could play out his current deal and pivot toward free agency next summer. That is the worst possible outcome for a franchise that just sacrificed its short-term future to get him.

This is also a reminder of why Doncic is different than most modern stars. He is not asking to play with friends. He is not chasing a specific city. He wants to win. The Lakers built a brand around stars who want to win in purple and gold. They need to back it up.

Free agency officially opens June 30. The Lakers have a window of maybe two weeks to make Doncic feel like the franchise is serious about a title push in 2027.

Pelinka has been on this kind of mission before. He pulled off the Anthony Davis trade. He talked Doncic out of Dallas after the most stunning star swap in modern NBA history. He has the credibility to make another major move.

What he cannot afford is to slow play it. Doncic’s patience is part of why he is in Los Angeles. His patience is not infinite. If the Lakers want to make this their generational team, the time to push the chips into the middle is now.

The early returns from this offseason have been quiet. The next few weeks have to be loud.
