LeBron James Picks the 76ers After Rich Paul Whiteboard Drama: The King Actually Signs in Philly
LeBron James is a Sixer. Rich Paul made it official the way he made everything else about this free agency official. On a whiteboard.
Paul went on “Game Over” with Max Kellerman and marched through the ten teams that were on his whiteboard as legitimate destinations for LeBron. Golden State, Dallas, Boston, Philadelphia, Miami, Minnesota, Denver, Cleveland, New York, San Antonio. Then he circled Philadelphia.
The King is going to play with Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown, and Tyrese Maxey. That is the roster now. That is the team that Kevin Durant just spent a week arguing on Instagram is better than any team the KD-era Warriors put on the floor.
Rich Paul is trolling us at this point, and it is working. The whiteboard bit was a masterpiece of modern player empowerment. He turned his client’s free agency into appointment television. He gave every fan base a reason to hope for two months. He made LeBron the center of the NBA conversation for a summer where the biggest actual on-court event was Summer League. And then he closed with the perfect punchline.
“Everything changed after the Brown trade,” Paul said. That was the tell. The Sixers moving assets to bring in Jaylen Brown from Boston reshaped the East. Then the LeBron piece slotted in on top.
The basketball question, as always with LeBron in his 23rd season, is whether the fit works. Embiid needs a first read who can facilitate. Brown needs someone who can create shots for him. Maxey needs a mentor as much as a running mate. LeBron does all three of those things at a Hall of Fame level even at 41.
The issue is health. Embiid has to stay on the court. LeBron has to manage his body on the front and back ends of a 82-game season. Brown has to be the version of himself that won a Finals MVP, not the version who fights his own shot sometimes. Nick Nurse is the coach who has to blend all of it into a rotation that also uses Tyrese Maxey correctly and gets Kelly Oubre and the rest of the wings meaningful minutes.
Nobody actually knows if this team is going to win a championship. It is objectively the most talented roster in the Eastern Conference on paper. It is also a group with real chemistry questions, an aging superstar coming off the biggest life change of his professional career, and a coach who has been to a Finals but never with this cast.
The Warriors were reportedly pessimistic that LeBron was ever really coming to them, and that turned out to be accurate. Golden State had the storybook fit on paper, but the numbers never worked and the future path was murky. Philadelphia was the pragmatic answer and, as it turns out, the actual answer.
