LeBron James Responds to Sam Darnold’s Defense of His 76ers Move: ‘Good Luck This Season’
LeBron James does not always respond to what people say about him, but when a Seahawks quarterback goes on Hard Knocks to defend his free agency decision, that gets a reply.
James posted an Instagram Story on Wednesday thanking Sam Darnold for having his back after the Seattle QB pushed back on criticism of LeBron’s move to the Philadelphia 76ers. “Good luck this season guys,” James wrote to Darnold and the Seahawks.
The exchange started when Darnold was mic’d up for HBO’s Hard Knocks and gave his take on LeBron picking Philadelphia over other suitors. Darnold’s argument, essentially, was that at 41 years old with everything already accomplished, LeBron has zero obligation to prove anything to anyone. If he wants to chase a ring with a loaded roster, that is his prerogative.
The Criticism LeBron Keeps Hearing
LeBron has been catching heat all summer for picking the 76ers. The argument from critics is familiar. He is teaming up with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Paul George on an already stacked roster. It is another superteam move from the same guy who has been making superteam moves since 2010.
That argument is exhausted. LeBron is 41. He has four championships. He has more career points than anyone in NBA history. If his last ride includes stacking a roster to chase one more title, that is not a moral failing. It is a business decision.
Darnold understands that better than most because he lived it. He spent his career being told he was a bust in New York, was cast off, and had to rebuild his career in San Francisco and Minnesota before finding a real chance in Seattle.
