LeBron James Tells Lakers He Won’t Return, Rich Paul Names Knicks, Sixers, Celtics as Fits

LeBron James is not going to be a Los Angeles Laker in 2026-27. That is now official, and it changes the entire NBA offseason.

James informed the Lakers he will not be returning. His agent Rich Paul went public shortly after on the “Game Over” podcast with Max Kellerman and named specific teams as potential fits. Paul mentioned the New York Knicks, Philadelphia 76ers, and Boston Celtics as landing spots James is considering.

Those are three East contenders that all just added significant pieces. That is not a random group.

The Lakers are already moving on. Reports indicate they are reshaping their frontcourt in the wake of James’ exit, likely leaning on Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves as the new core with Dalton Knecht getting a bigger role. Rob Pelinka is playing this like a team that saw it coming.

Paul naming three teams publicly is not an accident. It is a message. It tells every one of those front offices that a conversation is welcome. It also puts pressure on other contenders like the Warriors, Nuggets, and Thunder to make their case before those three lock in.

The Knicks fit is fascinating. New York already has Jalen Brunson, OG Anunoby, Karl-Anthony Towns, and now Josh Hart in a healthy prime window. Adding LeBron gives them a closer, a passer, and a proven title winner in a conference that just lost some depth at the top.

The Sixers fit is the storyline of the summer. Jaylen Brown just landed in Philadelphia. Joel Embiid is healthy. Nick Nurse gets a Hall of Famer to run the offense through. That team has the ceiling.

The Celtics fit is a “we are still Boston” play. Jayson Tatum is coming back from a devastating Achilles injury and the team needs a bridge presence. LeBron would be that guy for a season or two.

The catch is Bronny James. LeBron has been very open about wanting to keep playing with his son. The Lakers had Bronny. Whatever team gets LeBron may have to figure out a G League or two-way situation for Bronny too. That is a legitimate wrinkle.

Whichever team wins this is instantly the East favorite. Whichever team loses will regret every second they hesitated. This is a real decision with real title implications, and it is playing out in public.

Twenty-three seasons in and LeBron James is still the biggest domino in the NBA. He always was.
