Even Adam Silver is waiting on LeBron.
The NBA commissioner told reporters this week that LeBron James’ still-undecided free agency has forced the league to hold off on finalizing the 2026-27 regular season schedule. Read that sentence again. The commissioner of a $10 billion enterprise is delaying the calendar because one 41-year-old player has not picked a team.
That is the power LeBron James still holds in this league, and it is honestly a little ridiculous.
LeBron told the Lakers in late June that he was not returning to Los Angeles for the 2026-27 season. That made him an unrestricted free agent for the third time in his career. He gave a brief public statement acknowledging the decision but has not tipped his hand on where he is going.
This is the third time in my career I’ve been a free agent, James said. It’s a big decision, not only for myself, but my family as well. This is the last part of my career and where I want to spend the last few years, or last year, or last two years of my NBA career.
The odds have shifted dramatically. As of Monday morning, the Miami Heat lead the sweepstakes at 52 percent. That is a huge jump from three weeks ago when Cleveland was the odds-on favorite. The Warriors, at one point considered dead in the race, are being described by insiders as a dark horse but privately admit LeBron is likely headed East.
Silver’s frustration is understandable. The league typically releases its regular season schedule in mid-August. National TV partners need dates for their marquee windows. Teams need to sell season tickets. Players and coaches need to know when the season starts. And right now, everyone is on hold because nobody wants to release a schedule and then have to redo half the Christmas Day, opening night, and marquee Saturday matchups after LeBron picks his team.
Miami is the sensible pick. Erik Spoelstra is the best coach in the league. Giannis Antetokounmpo just landed there. Bam Adebayo is one of the best two-way bigs in basketball. LeBron on a title-ready roster in a state with no income tax and warm weather? Yeah, that tracks.
Cleveland is the emotional pick. Return home. Ride into the sunset with the franchise where it all started. Play with Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, and Evan Mobley. But the fit is awkward, the front office has not made the moves the Cavaliers need to make to convince him, and the tax bill would be brutal.
Golden State would be the we get one more championship together pick, but the roster on paper is not as ready as Miami’s, and the money is complicated.
Whatever the answer is, LeBron needs to make it soon. The NBA cannot keep waiting. And frankly, the drama is getting old.
