Knicks Roll Out No-Bag Policy and TSA-Style Screening for First NBA Finals Game at MSG Since 1999

The New York Knicks are not playing around with security for Monday’s Game 3. The franchise is hosting its first NBA Finals game at Madison Square Garden since 1999, and the team has announced a heightened protocol package that reads like a Super Bowl checklist.

According to the team’s official statement on X, a strict no-bag policy will be in effect, and fans are being asked to limit personal items to an absolute minimum. The Knicks are also implementing TSA-style screening at the doors and asking everyone to arrive at least two hours before tip-off.

There is an obvious reason for the upgrade. President Donald Trump is expected to attend the game, which automatically brings Secret Service involvement and a tighter perimeter. Mitchell Robinson said this week he is excited about Trump being there, and the visit is one of the highest-profile political appearances at an NBA game in years.

Game 3 is also a chance for the Knicks to virtually end this series. They lead 2-0 after taking both games in San Antonio. No team in NBA history has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit in a best-of-seven, so a win Monday would put Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs in territory no one has ever escaped from.

The last time the Finals were at MSG, it ended badly for New York. The Spurs closed out the 1999 series with a Game 5 win, the franchise’s first championship. The symbolism of San Antonio coming back to the Garden 27 years later is heavy, and the Knicks would obviously love to flip the script.

For fans heading to the arena, the practical takeaway is simple. Do not bring a bag. Show up early. Expect lines. Anything that slows down screening at the doors is going to make a long day longer, and there is no version of Monday where you want to miss tip-off because security was backed up to 7th Avenue.

The Knicks have not held a Larry O’Brien Trophy since 1973. Two more wins in this series ends a 53-year drought. Whatever the security setup looks like, the building is going to be louder than it has been in a generation. The Spurs are about to walk into the most hostile environment of the entire postseason, and the schedule is not doing them any favors either.

If you are San Antonio, you have to win Game 3. Not should. Have to. The history of teams clawing back from 0-2 to win a Finals is not encouraging, but the history of teams falling 0-3 is nonexistent. Wembanyama either steals one at MSG on Monday or this thing is functionally over.
