Klay Thompson is a member of the Miami Heat. The four-time champion agreed to a two-year, $13 million deal after clearing waivers on his Dallas Mavericks buyout, and Pat Riley just handed his roster a piece that solves multiple problems at once.
The Mavericks were paying Thompson $17.5 million next season and decided the fit was not worth the money. Miami got him at a discount, on a short deal, with a player option on year two. That is roster construction with a scalpel.
The context matters here. The Heat added Giannis Antetokounmpo this summer in the biggest trade of the offseason, and now Riley needed shooting to space the floor around him. Thompson is still one of the most feared off-ball shooters in the sport even if he does not create off the dribble the way he did in 2019.
Giannis in the middle of the floor, Bam Adebayo screening at the elbow, Tyler Herro coming off actions, and Thompson standing in the corner with his feet set. Defenses have to pick their poison. Nobody has an answer that does not leave someone open.
The Heat also get the intangible piece that every locker room hunting a title needs. Thompson has won four rings. He has hit shots in Game 6 of the Finals. He has been on the floor when it mattered more times than most rosters combined. Miami is a culture team. He fits the culture on day one.
The concerns are real. Thompson turned in an uneven season in Dallas, his defense is not what it used to be, and the Heat cannot hide him on switches against the best guards in the East. That is the tradeoff at $6.5 million a year. Miami is not paying him to guard Jalen Brunson. It is paying him to make Cleveland pay for helping off him.
The Eastern Conference just got harder to sort. The Cavaliers added Peyton Watson. The Knicks are the Knicks. The Pacers still have Tyrese Haliburton. Nobody is running away with anything. Miami just quietly made itself the most complete roster in the conference outside of Cleveland.
Riley won this transaction. Thompson gets to chase a fifth ring next to the best two-way player of his generation. The Heat get an elite floor spacer at a bargain price. Both sides get something they needed, and the East just got tighter.
The Warriors era is fully in the rearview. Klay Thompson in a Heat jersey feels strange to type. It is going to look right the first time he splashes a corner three off a Giannis kickout in October.
