Kevin Durant decided to spend part of his week on Instagram arguing that the current Philadelphia 76ers are more talented than the Warriors teams that won two championships with him on the roster. Klay Thompson decided to spend part of his week telling KD to log off.
Durant, now with the Houston Rockets, commented under a fan post suggesting the 2026-27 Sixers, with LeBron James, Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown, and Tyrese Maxey, might be more loaded than the Warriors dynasty. Durant agreed and threw in a shot at his former teammate. He wrote that Klay was “never a MVP candidate in nothing, 22ppg” as part of his argument.
Thompson’s response was three words. “Aye man, u good?”
Draymond Green also chimed in with his own version of confusion at the whole thing. Nobody in Bay Area circles was pleased that Durant, five years removed from his last game in a Warriors uniform, was on Instagram punching down on old teammates to prop up his current league opinion.
Here is the thing about the debate itself. It is completely silly. The 2016 to 2019 Warriors were one of the most talented offensive teams in NBA history. Steph, Klay, Draymond, and Durant is four Hall of Famers. Andre Iguodala came off the bench. They won two titles and probably should have had a third. Comparing that to a Sixers team that has not played a game together yet is bordering on unserious.
What Durant is really doing is what he has always done on social media. He is bored, he sees a take he half-agrees with, and he engages with it in a way that ends up making him look small. He is a Top-15 player of all time and he still cannot resist replying to fans with 400 followers. It is his most predictable habit.
The Klay shot is what pushed it into news territory. Klay Thompson was never chasing MVPs, that is true. He was also the greatest catch-and-shoot shooter in NBA history, an All-Defensive team wing, and the guy who once dropped 60 points in three quarters. To reduce him to “22 ppg” is bad-faith arguing, and Durant knows it.
Klay took the high road. “U good” is the correct level of engagement. Do not go back and forth with KD. Do not give him the fuel. Just make him look concerned about your well-being and move on.
The Rockets have title expectations this year. The Warriors are trying to squeeze one more run out of Steph and the young core. The Sixers are the team everyone is watching to see what happens when LeBron joins Embiid.
None of that has anything to do with what the Warriors were in 2017. Durant should watch a rewatch of the Cleveland Finals and come back with a different take.
