Klay Thompson Confirms Real Reason He Didn’t Join Lakers

Klay Thompson was confronted with a tough decision this past summer when the Golden State Warriors made it clear they didn’t want him.

The Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers both made bids for his services.

Ultimately, he opted to join Luka Doncic and Co.

Although his real reason for the choice was privately whispered about at the time, this week it was confirmed.

“Thompson chose the Mavericks over the Los Angeles Lakers, who also recruited him in free agency because he believed Dallas provided him the best chance to pursue a fifth championship ring,” wrote ESPN’s Tim MacMahon.

“He believed he could be the missing player after the Mavs, fresh off their five-game NBA Finals loss to the Boston Celtics, promised him a starting spot. He craved the opportunity to prove that, at 34 years old and with two major injuries on his medical records, he could still play a major role on a contender.”

Thompson’s desire to play for a title contender was understandable, though it remains to be seen if Dallas fits the bill.

The team is currently 5-6 and boasts a worse record than the Lakers.

Nevertheless, Thompson made his choice. Whether or not it pays off for him is something that will be learned over the course of the 2024-25 NBA season.
