Toronto and the Clippers agreed on a framework weeks ago. Kawhi to Toronto for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, and future first-round picks. Leonard’s camp made it clear he only wanted to sign an extension with a team not named the Clippers, and Toronto was his preferred destination. Ownership signed off. The deal was ready.
Then the NBA’s investigation into the Aspiration situation stalled everything.
What the Investigation Is Actually About
The NBA has been looking into allegations that Kawhi received impermissible benefits through his Clippers-adjacent business dealings, specifically involving the now-defunct Aspiration financial services company. If the league finds that Steve Ballmer or the Clippers steered payments to Leonard outside his salary, the punishment could be severe. We are talking loss of draft picks, front-office suspensions, and voided contract terms.
The investigation is technically over. The league has finished collecting evidence. But several procedural hurdles remain before the trade can be officially completed and Kawhi can put pen to paper on his Toronto extension.
Silver acknowledged the mess this week. “I’m hopeful that it will wrap up this summer,” the commissioner said, which is corporate-speak for we are trying and no promises.
Why Toronto Fans Should Still Be Excited
If this trade goes through, the Raptors get their guy back. Kawhi already delivered a title in Toronto in 2019. The city gave him a hero’s welcome even after he left for the Clippers. Bringing him home is emotional and strategic all at once.
Toronto has been in retooling mode since Fred VanVleet left. Scottie Barnes has taken the leap into franchise-player territory. RJ Barrett has settled into a productive complementary role. Adding a two-time Finals MVP with something to prove is exactly the kind of injection this roster needed.
The catch is Kawhi’s health. He has played more than 60 games in a season exactly once in the last six years. Any trade for him is a bet that his body cooperates. Toronto is betting that Northern climate, better load management, and Nick Nurse’s replacement can keep him upright.
Why the Clippers Are Anxious
The Clippers need this to close. They have Ingram penciled into their lineup. They need Kawhi’s cap number off the books. They have moves lined up that depend on this deal being final.
If the NBA rules against the franchise on the Aspiration matter, Steve Ballmer could lose picks that were supposed to be part of the return package. That would tank the entire framework. Toronto might walk. Kawhi might have to consider other suitors or wait until midseason.
The Mavericks are lurking on the periphery. So are the Knicks. If the Raptors deal collapses, expect another bidding war within 72 hours.
Silver said this summer. Fans are hoping he means it. Because right now every conversation about the Eastern Conference and the Pacific Division has an asterisk next to it until Kawhi lands.
